The World's Leading Info Tech Research Labs
Here's how researchers themselves rank world laboratories doing work in four
broad areas of information-technology research. The researchers were asked how
they thought the labs ranked today and around 1978, as the personal computer
industry was just beginning.
These standings are based on an informal E-mail survey done in May, 1997, by
Business Week. The bulk of the researchers who participated were from U.S.
labs, so the positions of European and Asian labs are probably lower than they
would have been with greater international participation. The survey was not
scientifically designed, so the results are not statistically valid. Labs that
are grouped together in the lists below were approximately equal in rank.
